          < normal spring day >

At the nursery I get a cactus.
To be truthful, I get two.

        The cacti add up.

        And the flowers are beautiful,
        but I resist.
        Thank goodness,
as I'd just have to plant them.

"Or more likely buy them and not plant them",
say my yellow primroses from last year
madly blooming but still in their nursery pots.

        I stop for a donut.
        Two, to be truthful.
Well, to be closer to the truth.

        Then I continue
        with the new leaves
        and birds and birds.

        A tall tree I can't identify
seems to be steaming in the sun,
        but is really
filling the air with cottony seeds.

        My dog chases a dragonfly,
        the first I've seen.

                     - - -

          < early times >

        leaning
        into a sharp turn
        swapping
        history and hopes
        the brush of your hand
        a close warm breath
        reaching back
        for what you're handing me
        finding
        your soft breast

              - - -

< wet to the skin >

        thunderstorms roll through
        and i watch the rain
        dripping off your shirt
        wet to the skin
        the rain
        dripping off you
        covered
        by your wet shirt
        that flashes
        with lightning
        to the south

            - - -
< only teenagers can need it so bad >

          texas
          on the way to
          liberty texas
          we
          hafta stop
          to fuck on the hood
                - - -

        < silk bikini >

        i'm looking back
        waiting for you
        in your silk bikini
        missing the top
        and the bottom
        i want to see you
        exactly as you are
        right before fucking you
        right before you get
        what we've wanted all day

              - - -

        < ginger writes me >

        the words
        fall one after the other
        put there by ginger
        by you
        if you're ginger
        one after the other
        with the picture you enclosed
        of your daughter
        and of course
        you
        would name her ginger too
the ginger that lived with me
        from a child of 4 to 6
        while you were off
        for holding those drugs
        a long time ago
        but ginger
        came through just fine
        and at 22
        she looks like you
same hair and nose and all the
        soft pieces fit together
        so i can't help thinking
        maybe
        it's you again

              - - -

          < ginger shows up >

        ginger shows up
        on her boyfriend's motorcycle
        says her mom
        is up to herself again
and i guess i have to help
which will piss off my wife
        cause she's guessed
        what i never told her
        but i hop on
        arms
        around her waist
        trying not to act
        like i feel her breasts
with each bump in the road
        and thinking of when
        i used to bathe her
        of those sweet lips
        between her legs

              - - -

               < visions >

        you say visions are overrated
        you have several every night
        and at least one
        each day
        usually at lunch
when they serve the tuna noodle casserole
        of course
i have only you to trust
        not the wisest thing
        cause in your family
        you either lie
or end up on the floor with bruises
        but you always call them
        rose tattoos

                  - - -

< these stars treat us too well >
         - after a sylvia plath poem

        the stars drop silently
        each message lit
        through years and years
        of vacuum
        evaporated
        all the first sweet essence
        until us
poor souls of lead once uranium
        linger
        turn
        like jupiter
        who thinks he's mercury
        like saturn
who wants to be distant pluto
willing to give up her rings
        for a far dark silence

                 - - -

< it seems bees have a notion of honor >
(after reading a poem by sylvia plath)

        my fantasy
        poor fantasy
i am not crazy or genius enough to come to you
        but after reading this
        i want
        to keep you close
        to find out more
        i know
you were a complete trouble in this life
        born
        at a wrong angle
        born
with the pain to shout this loud
        and louder and louder
        to greet us
        with your puzzle
        with your furious capacity
        to fill us
        til we burst
              - - -

           < gratuitous wordage >
a lot of people ask for coffee
and a little kiss in the morning
using only the words they need
        but poets
(and you've guessed it by now)
kill for the pleasure of it
                  - - -
 bye for now.
